Saranda to Tirana by Car: The Ultimate Scenic Drive Guide

The 280-kilometer drive from Saranda to Tirana is one of the most rewarding road trips in the Balkans. You'll climb from the Ionian coast through a dramatic mountain pass, weave along cliffside roads above turquoise water, cross fertile lowlands, and arrive in a buzzing capital city. It can be done in 4-5 hours of pure driving, but you'll want a full day to do it justice. Here's the complete route guide.

Choosing Your Route: Coastal SH8 vs. Inland A2

There are two main ways to get from Saranda to Tirana, and they offer completely different experiences:

  • Coastal route via SH8 (recommended): Saranda → Himara → Llogara Pass → Vlora → Fier → A2 motorway → Tirana. About 280 km, 5-6 hours with stops. This is the scenic route, following the Albanian Riviera before joining the motorway at Fier. Stunning but slower due to winding mountain roads.
  • Inland route via Gjirokastra and A2: Saranda → Gjirokastra → Tepelena → Fier → A2 motorway → Tirana. About 300 km, 4-5 hours. Faster overall because you join the A2 motorway sooner, and the inland road from Gjirokastra to Tepelena is less twisty than the coast. Less scenic but more efficient.

If this is your first time, take the coastal SH8 northbound — the views are spectacular and the Llogara Pass is unforgettable.

Saranda to Himara: The Riviera Stretch

Leaving Saranda, the SH8 climbs into the hills and you quickly enter the heart of the Albanian Riviera. The first 40 kilometers to Himara take about 50 minutes due to the winding road, but the views down to Porto Palermo Bay and its Ottoman-era castle are worth every turn. Consider a quick stop at Porto Palermo Castle — entrance is 200 ALL (1.80 EUR) and the fortress sits on a small peninsula surrounded by deep blue water. The road is fully paved with guardrails on the cliff sections, but it's narrow in places with tight blind curves, so drive attentively.

Himara is a great place for a coffee or breakfast stop. The town has a charming waterfront promenade with cafes where an espresso and a byrek (savory pastry) cost about 200 ALL (1.80 EUR). Fuel up here — there's a reliable station on the main road at the north end of town.

Himara to Vlora: Over the Llogara Pass

This 75-kilometer section is the highlight of the entire drive. North of Himara, the road passes through Dhermi and then begins the dramatic ascent to the Llogara Pass at 1,027 meters elevation. The road climbs through dense pine forest with hairpin switchbacks, and the air temperature drops noticeably. At the top, there's a viewpoint and the Llogara National Park visitor area where you can stop for photos. On clear days, you can see Corfu across the strait.

The descent toward Vlora is equally dramatic, with the road winding down the western slope toward the Bay of Vlora. Allow 1.5-2 hours for this stretch, more in summer when traffic is heavier. The road is well-maintained but demands concentration — keep your headlights on through the pass even in daylight, as fog can appear quickly.

Vlora: Lunch Stop at the Crossroads

Vlora is the largest city on the southern coast and a natural midpoint for the drive. The waterfront boulevard (Lungomare) has dozens of restaurants where a full lunch with fresh seafood, salad, and drinks runs about 2,000-3,000 ALL (18-27 EUR) for two people. Vlora is also where you leave the coast — from here, the road heads inland toward Fier. Top off your fuel tank in Vlora; stations are plentiful and prices are standard.

Vlora to Fier: Crossing the Plain

The 75-kilometer drive from Vlora to Fier crosses the Myzeqe plain, Albania's agricultural heartland. The landscape changes completely — flat farmland, olive groves, and straight roads. This section takes about 50 minutes and is the fastest part of the trip. The road is a dual carriageway in good condition. Fier itself isn't a tourist destination, but if you have time, the ancient ruins of Apollonia are just 12 kilometers west of the city — a worthwhile 30-minute detour to see one of the most important Greek colonies in the ancient world. Entrance is 700 ALL (6.30 EUR).

Fier to Tirana: The Fast Finish

At Fier, you join the A2 motorway heading north toward Tirana. This is a modern, well-maintained highway with a speed limit of 110 km/h. The 120-kilometer drive takes about 1.5 hours in normal traffic. You'll pass through Lushnja and Elbasan district before reaching the Tirana ring road. If you're returning a rental car to Tirana, most agencies are near the city center or at the airport — follow signs accordingly. There are no tolls on the A2.

Practical Information

  • Best season: May through October. The Llogara Pass can be foggy or even icy in winter months (December-February). Summer offers the best visibility but heavier traffic.
  • Fuel stops: Fill up in Saranda, Himara, Vlora, and Fier. There are no stations through the Llogara Pass.
  • Road conditions: Fully paved throughout. The SH8 coastal section has tight curves and narrow stretches. The A2 motorway from Fier is a modern highway.
  • Car type: Any rental car handles this route. An SUV is not necessary unless you plan to detour to off-road beaches along the way.
  • Start early. Leave Saranda by 8:00 AM to avoid the midday heat on the coast and arrive in Tirana by early afternoon. This also gives you time for stops without feeling rushed.

The Saranda to Tirana drive distills everything that makes Albania special into a single day: crystal-clear coast, ancient ruins, a mountain pass that takes your breath away, and a vibrant capital waiting at the end. Whether you're wrapping up a beach holiday or starting a cross-country road trip, this route is essential. Find your rental car on Utana and make the drive yourself.
